In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
