The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
