A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
