2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Feedback

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a more defined game identity.

The president noted that the team is now reimagining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.

Below is the full text from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented creators we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to continue.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to heart and reimagined the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to deliver on its ambition to our fans.

The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Lead of the team. Following some time of conversations, he starts with us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most popular series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in receiving him in the coming days. We are all eager to persist witnessing the evolution of the game in the time to come.

David

Experience of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman currently serves in the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was revealed in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Then, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting step forward on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every session. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, gamble everything, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."

Project Ethos has not yet received an announced release date or supported systems, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as development progresses.
